SINGAPORE: There is a notable omission in Cathay Cineplexes’ current slate of movie offerings – Deadpool & Wolverine, the biggest film of the year to date.
The film’s absence was a “business decision”, Bianca Leong, the director of mm2 Asia, which owns Cathay Cineplexes, said on Monday (Jul 29) in response to CNA’s query.
Checks by CNA revealed that other cinema operators in Singapore – major chains Golden Village and Shaw, as well as others like WE Cinemas, Filmgarde, EagleWings Cinematics and The Projector, are screening the film.
Besides Deadpool & Wolverine, recent Walt Disney offerings like Inside Out 2, were also not screened at Cathay Cineplexes.
Disney, the film’s distributor, “has been a good partner to us and will always be a good partner to mm2”, said Ms Leong.
The spokesperson did not respond to CNA’s query about whether upcoming movies like Alien: Romulus and future offerings by Disney would be screened at Cathay Cineplexes.
CNA has contacted Disney for more information.
Cathay Cineplexes has five outlets in Singapore: Causeway Point, Downtown East, West Mall, JEM and Century Square.
Some outlets have closed in last two years, the latest being the AMK Hub outlet in June 2024.
Outlets at Orchard Cineleisure, the Cathay Building and Parkway Parade have also shuttered.
Deadpool & Wolverine made US$205 million in its first weekend in North American theatres, according to studio estimates.
Including international showings, where it earned an additional US$233.3 million, Deadpool & Wolverine is looking at a global opening of over US$438.3 million.
It is by far the biggest opening of the year and the eighth biggest opening ever in North America.
